PHINMA Energy’s CSR programs cited

PHINMA Energy’s corporate social responsibility program received two Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) in a ceremony held in Bangkok, Thailand.

AREA recognizes and honors Asian businesses for championing sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship. Over 300 entries from 14 countries across Asia were screened over a three-month judging period.

PHINMA Energy’s livelihood program, Progressive Undertakings for Nation-Building and Life-Enhancing Advocacies or PUNLA, won in the Social Empowerment category. HELP Earth Environment, on the other hand, was recognized in the Green Leadership category.

“PUNLA is PHINMA Energy’s response to the needs of our partner communities for a more appropriate and sustainable development,” says Atty. Alan Ascalon, the company’s Vice-President for Legal and Corporate Affairs.

As of 2016, PHINMA Energy has organized 12 active livelihood groups supporting 117 households and implementing their own community-proposed livelihood. These initiatives are results of intensive community integration and mapping, and were started with the communities’ own strengths and skills.

HELP Earth, or Harnessing Energy Literacy for Planet Earth, started with initiatives geared towards energy literacy and environmental awareness among the youth and community. HELP Earth Environment complements the education program of PHINMA Energy.

The program provides a venue for like-minded groups and individuals to participate in the advocacies from the environment, as well as create a learning ground for students and future foresters.

“As of 2016, PHINMA Energy has recorded a survival rate of 85% in our 82-hectare adopted forests in three different sites in Bataan, Bulacan, and Guimaras,” says Jed Africa, the company’s CSR Senior Officer. “We also make sure that all seedlings planted are native and indigenous to our project sites to protect its biodiversity,” he adds.

The Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards is an initiative of Enterprise Asia, a non-governmental organization in pursuit of entrepreneurship development across the region.
